THE HARPY

In Greek mythology a Harpy is a hybrid creature, half woman and half vulture; very fierce, vile and loathsome, dwelling in filth and stench, contaminating everything within reach. The Greek “harpyia” means snatcher. Harpies are hungry, filthy creatures who snatch food, objects and even people who are tormented and never seen again. They take pleasure in punishment, torture and death. Greek mythology cast them as messengers of divine vengeance, the gods dispatching them to punish the evil by snatching away or fouling their food. Starting off as stormy Tornado Goddesses, they were originally beautiful, but over time became screechy, scratchy, vicious and downright disgusting in every way. Harpies can fly at the speed of sound, and one of their favorite tricks is to defecate upon the unworthy from a great height.

The Harpy was my challenge doll for the Enchanted Doll Artist Conference (EDAC) held in New Mexico this past July. Half cloth woman and half Apoxie Sculpt vulture she demands attention! Her face was created with a cloth-over-cloth method that allows a dimensional face with no visible center seam. The harpy's eye lashes and brows are rooted hair matching her Tibetan lamb wig. The leather halter was burned, torn and thoroughly distressed to follow her "grunge"  appearance and her hair was spikes and matted with my son's hair spiking glue. Her woman half was scuffed and stained to suit her filthy character. This was so much fun to create! I've already been asked to teach this class on line. I hope to design a series of hybrid creatures from mythology and fantasy worlds.

The Harpy is available for purchase.
