Harvest Party 2003

October 25,2003

The Egg Toss (below) is played by forming two lines and tossing an egg back and forth to your partner.  After a successful exchange, each player takes a step back increasing the tossing distance.  Sometimes the egg breaks from a poor throw,  a missed catch, or just bad luck.  The willing team received a candy prize.

The Three Legged Race (above) takes teamwork and coordination.  Partners have their legs tied together (we found that duct tape works very well for securing the legs together.) and then race to the finish line.  Two young lades practiced during the preceding days and had little problem out maneuvering the unrehearsed efforts of their competition.

The Sack Race is very simple.  Each participant puts their feet in a feed sack and hops to the finish line.  The adult crowd gets very competitive in this sport, and you don't see the cute bunny hops associated with the younger group of competitors.

Our Adult Games this year were mostly very manly games of war and destruction.  While the younger folk were permitted to play the safer games, only the adults were allowed to compete.  The first game is to climb Jacobs Ladder.  This rope ladder is secured by only one point at each end allowing it to spin.  To reach the top requires dexterity and balance.  Lawn Tractor Jousting uses foam rubber lances wrapped with duct tape.  The contestance stand on trailers pulled by lawn tractor and attempt to dismount their opponent.  The Giant War Hammer, a four hundred pound mass of distructive force, crushes into a bowling ball propelling it into an array of bowling pins.  Points are awarded by the number of pins knocked down.  The Giant Sling Shot fired water balloons at the target mounted to the barn (see racing pictures).  Firing range is about 300 feet.  Finally, the Catapult fired balls into kiddy pools.  Points were recorded for each activity and the winner received bragging rights at dinner.

Pot Luck Dinner was accented by hamburger hotdogs and sausage cooked on the grill by our resident chef.  Dinner entertainment ranged from singing to jokes to dance.  All young people who performed dinner entertainment received additional bonus tickets for the carnival games.

Fourteen individual carnival games staffed by guests and played by the young people.  The games were Balloon Hunting , Wheel of Fortune, Feed the Frog, Skinny Dipping, Harvest Moon Ball, Add-em up, Connect four, Skeel Ball, Give the Scarecrow a Hand, Spoiled Milk, Tic-Tac-Toss, Smashing Pumpkins, Dirty Laundry, and Gone Fishin'.  By "winning" the game, the participant received prize ticket that could be used for bidding on prizes at the prize auction (see below).

Every year, the show case is filled with prizes to be oooh'd and ah'd over and then finally auction off.  The young people use the prize tickets they won at the carnival games to bid on the prizes.  Everyone goes home with some assortment of prize goodies.

What would a fall party be without bobbing for apples.  Some people gingerly and patiently capture their prey, while others hole headedly attack.
