PENELOPE

Suitors of men searching for monetary gain often approached Renaissance women of wealth. Lady Penelope, quite comfortable with her life at court as a cousin to the King was in the position to consider and reject gold diggers and men below her station, or any other men of whom she chose not to waste her life. In fact, she took great pleasure in stringing them along, receiving their compliments and gifts until she no longer desired their company. Occasionally arrogant and self-indulging men would approach her and they were the ones she enjoyed toying with the most.

Prince Phillip, a dashing young man due to inherit an exceptional adjoining kingdom, attempted to break through Penelope’s suitor barrier and become her husband and eventually her king. He viewed her as a conquest; a challenge to prove to other men that he could obtain what they could not.

Penelope considered the possibilities of becoming a Queen to a nation greater than her own. She would have an opportunity to tend to more peasants and be sure they are protected from the evils of tax collectors. She could control a great many of his assets, as she was sure Phillip would spend far too much time daily with his tailor and his mirrors. He may be a fool, but he was a wealthy fool with much to offer. She would have an escort to all social events, and assumed status for the remainder of her life.

As Penelope reviewed the options, particularly that Prince Phillip would usually be so self-absorbed that he would not pester her as a typical husband might; she began to consider that maybe… just maybe the proposal was not so preposterous after all.
