Lester
the Jester was my first competition doll and was created to participate in the
1999 Hoffman Challenge. It was required that all entries be created using a
specific Hoffman fabric, which you may see in this picture as Lester’s Shirt
and sleeves. Lester was created from the armature up— no pattern
was involved, making him truly a one of a kind original. Lester was selected to
travel with the winning dolls for a one year tour to various exhibits around the
country. Including the winners only about 30 dolls traveled, making it an honor
for Lester to be chosen! However, when the display arrived in Columbus, Ohio for
me to view, Lester was posed quite differently than I had intended. He
originally was dancing on one leg, but he was displayed in Columbus as if he
were chilled and clutching his scepter close. Lester must not be suited to
travel, although, he still smiled for the cameras! I have since learned a great
deal about wire armatures and the importance of stability.
