I Challenge You

“Vera Badley”

As you probably know “Badley” is my feeble attempt at play on words. It’s not misspelled.

Mary Lauer, OH

"Shiva Blue" Shiva is a god of Hinduism. Traditionally Shiva is “the Destroyer.” In the truth it destroys to construct something new, thus, prefers to call it "transforming or renovator." The trident that it appears in photo is the Trishula. It is the weapon that destroys the ignorance in the human beings.

Clarisse Spenner

"Maisy, the Flapper" I kept her the size of the original pattern which was a challenge for me. I am used to working with larger dolls.

Jean Burlingame

"Miss Sandra Claus" The face is cloth over paper clay mask, the shoes are embroidered, I knitted the scarf and the bodice is beaded.

Sandra Fayle Hreno,

"Noelle" Gown was inspired by a gown I saw at the Fashion Institute of Technology Museum. Her hair is needle felted.

"Lady Yunhwa"

This sad lady was the true love of the first king of unified  Korea, Emperor Wang Guhn.  She was married off to a former Emperor who fell in love with her before Wang Guhn rose to the throne.  She was tortured for her love and remains an honored figure in Korean folklore to this day.

“Finding My Center” The piece grew out of my struggle this past year to find a solid center in my life.  The doll is created in two halves to show my divided self as I try to move forward and fashion a new life and still long to be with Spence as our life was.  The quilted background represents my attempt to bring a measure of order out of a difficult year of grief.
